Why food wholesalers pick FEFO, not FIFO

Jul 29, 2026 · BoxNCase

First-expired-first-out keeps short-dated cases from reaching retailers who will reject them.

FIFO ships the oldest receipt first. FEFO ships the soonest-to-expire first. For products with dates on the case they are not the same thing, and the difference is the chargeback you get when a retailer rejects a short-dated delivery.

A warehouse system that captures lot and expiry at receiving can enforce FEFO on the pick list instead of relying on a picker reading dates under warehouse lighting.
